Pete Chen testing a smart rotor in hover at the University of Maryland Gessow Rotorcraft Center |
Press Release - Peter Chen Named Director of Technical Programs Dr. Peter Chen has joined TSi as Director of Technical Development. Pete received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1990, 1993, and 1996. His research as a Smart Structures Fellow (under Professor Inderjit Chopra) at the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center covered a wide range of adaptive materials applications to rotorcraft systems, including conformal twist and trailing/leading-edge flap actuator systems. Dr. Chen's research on smart rotors with integral twist was judged an “Outstanding Contribution to the Engineering Profession,” by the Society of Mechanical Engineering in 1996. For the past 13 years, Dr. Chen has formulated analyses and experimentally verified structural models of smart material systems, with adaptive materials such as piezoelectrics, MR fluids, electrostrictives, magnetostrictives, shape memory alloys, and optical sensors for vibration, noise and damping control. During the past six years, Dr. Chen has served as Principal Investigator and Principal Specialist for 12 Phase I SBIR projects, 4 Phase II projects, and 2 Phase III projects. He holds four patents based on defense technology programs. Pete's initial assignments at TSi include technical direction of the OFREV project, a US Army project for accurate determination of round muzzle velocity, and management of TSi's Trident Maritime program for ship monitoring. Pete is a skilled RC helicopter pilot and a scratch golfer. |
