U.S. Navy Awards TSi Contract to Demonstrate Adaptive MR Seat Technology in High Speed Watercraft The team of Techno-Sciences Inc. (TSi) and the Smart Structures Laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), was awarded a U.S. Navy BAA contract to further develop and demonstrate its innovative adaptive seating technology in the Mark V Special Operations Craft (SOC) – USSOCOM’s medium range insertion and extraction platform for Special Operations Forces. This effort is a Phase III award for the TSi’s ongoing U.S. Marine Corp. Phase II SBIR for adaptive magnetorheological (MR) seating technology for the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV), led by Dr. Gregory Hiemenz. In this effort, the project team plans to retrofit the seats for the Mark V SOC with TSi’s patented MR seat suspension technology which adapts its energy absorbing capability to both occupant weight and widely varying operating conditions. By optimally mitigation wave-to-hull impact shock and isolating vibration, this system will allow for extended mission lengths and provide significantly improved protection of Special Operations Forces by mitigating injurious, debilitating, and fatiguing effects caused by exposure to severe and repetitive shock events as well as harmful whole body vibration. The end goal of this 14 month effort is to install and test a tactical prototype MR seat suspension system in the Mark V SOC to a full-scale operational environment. This award demonstrates another application for TSi’s MR seat technology in addition to TSI's ongoing three-year U.S. Navy program for developing MR systems for helicopter seats and Phase II SBIR for the EFV. |
