The Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has selected Techno-Sciences to provide its new COSPAS-SARSAT system. The system, including a Local User Terminal, Mission Control Center , and two Rescue Planning Workstations will be installed at NEMA headquarters in Abuja.

“We are delighted to have been selected by NEMA for this important project,” said Dr. Gil Blankenship, Chairman of Techno-Sciences. “The Nigerian SARSAT system will provide the first coverage of the West-Central African region. Nigeria will join the other COSPAS-SARSAT ground segment providers in saving lives and assuring maritime and aviation safety.” “We are pleased to be working with TSi to build the first Mission Control Center in this part of Africa. The system will be vital in providing early alerting of emergencies in our country and the surrounding region,” said Mrs. Oluremi Olowu, Director General of NEMA. Mrs. Olowu has been DG of NEMA since its formation. Mrs. Olowu created the agency in 1999 as part of the Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's commitment to public safety. The NEMA's mission is to provide timely and effective management of emergencies and disasters in country. With over 126 million citizens Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. Nigeria has extensive off-shore oil reserves in the south. The new SARSAT system will support maritime and aviation safety throughout the country. Nigeria joined the COSPAS-SARSAT organization in 1999. Planning for acquisition of ground segment equipment was led by Group Captain T. Dick- Iruenabere, Head of Search and Rescue for NEMA. Mrs. Olowu left NEMA in late 2002 to run for public office. Dr. S. Makarfi succeeded her as Director General of NEMA. Gpt. Captain Fisher succeeded Gpt. Captain Dick- Iruenabere as Director of SAR at NEMA.

NEMA staff members Daniel Gambo, Obehioye Ogun, Kayode Fagbemi, Bala Audu, Abdulahi Alani Salami visited TSi to receive training on the LUT and MCC Operations. The training was conducted by Jeff Khorrami, Vice-President for SARSAT systems and other members of TSi's SARSAT staff. Technical support for the new system will be provided by Sahara Bells, a Nigerian high technology company, directed by Mr. Sam Igwe.
