Semi-Active Seating Technology for the EFV

19 Jan. 2007 - Techno-Sciences Inc. (TSI), in collaboration with Smart Structures Laboratory at the University of Maryland , College Park (UMCP), was awarded a Phase I SBIR contract by the U.S. Navy Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCOR) to develop an innovative seating technology for the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) - the U.S military's newest armored amphibious troop carrier. According to the Principal Investigator, Mr. Gregory Hiemenz, this semi-active seat suspension system will utilize magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers to adapt its energy absorbing capability to the widely varying operating conditions experienced by the EFV. This system will mitigate injurious or debilitating effects caused by exposure to severe shock events such as a "rogue" wave or ballistic/UNDEX shock event as well as chronic exposure repetitive shock experienced during high speed waterborne operations in sea states. Furthermore, this system will also improve comfort and reduce fatigue by isolating the occupant from lower amplitude vibrations during normal land operations. MR fluid dampers are particularly attractive for this application because of their low power requirements, low weight, high dynamic force range, and high mechanical reliability (no moving parts). The project team intends to build from its successes on the Semi-Active Magnetorheological Seating Suspension (SAMSS) system currently being developed for U.S. Navy Rotorcraft to develop a uniquely capable system for the EFV.
