High-Performance, Hybrid Optical/RF Transceiver BAA Project funded by U.S. Navy Techno-Sciences, Inc. (TSi) in a collaboration with the Maryland Optics Group (MOG) from the University of Maryland are working under Office of Naval Research funding to design, fabricate, and deliver an operational hybrid optical wireless/RF high data rate, long-range communications network technology. This system will provide common aperture optical wireless 2.5Gb/s data transmission capability over ranges up to 60-km at high altitude, with parallel Ku band RF capability at rates up to 50Mb/s. A high-speed, precision-controlled gimbal system provides stability and pointing ability of communications nodes due to vehicle motion and other disturbances. Our technology has demonstrated superior performance features, with resistance to the fading caused on optical wireless links by atmospheric turbulence. To further increase communications availability, the TSi system operates with continuous, parallel FSO/RF communications capability, with both modes functioning independently at the same time; or, if required, a seamlessly changing over between optical and RF communication modalities as a function of obscuration conditions. |
