January 11, 2008 The multi-disciplinary team of Techno-Sciences, Inc., University of Maryland,
General Dynamics Ground Systems, BAE Mobility & Protection Systems,
and LORD Corporation, was awarded a Phase II SBIR today from the United
States Marine Corp. to continue development of shock and vibration attenuation
seating systems for the Marine Corp's Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV).
This project exploits TSi and UMD's patented magnetorheological (MR) fluid
damper technologies and is focused on producing a retro-fit capable MR
damper system to the EFV for full-scale land and sea testing. Accordingly
to TSi project lead, Dr. Greg Hiemenz, specific features of the TSi/UMD
seat system enabling extended mission lengths and enhanced occupant protection
include: Mitigation severe and repeated mechanical shock; Reduced injury
risk during extreme events such as a “rogue” wave or ballistic/UNDEX
shock event; and isolation of lower amplitude vibrations. This is the
third of TSi's active seating projects featuring MR damper technology. ![]() |
