High-Performance, Optical/RF Communications System TSi and the University of Maryland have won an Office of Naval Research (ONR) Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) award to produce a tactical prototype that demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of a common aperture, hybrid free space/RF wireless communication system. This technology, based on modular communications packages consisting of optical and RF transceivers, will provide high-speed, relay/routing capability for airborne/sea/ground Navy networks. Optical transmission of data offers virtually zero probability of detection/intercept for enhanced communications over great distances. If optical obscuration occurs, the TSi/UMD technology will seamlessly transition to directional RF transceivers to ensure uninterrupted data flow within the network. Dr. Peter Chen leads TSi engineers to develop an active gimbal and motion control system that will provide pointing, acquisition and tracking of discrete communications nodes. |
