TSi awarded contract to develop Smart Flap system The United States Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate has awarded TSi Phase I Option and Phase II SBIR contracts to develop an advanced trailing-edge flap actuator for helicopters. This project, performed in collaboration with the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center at the University of Maryland and the Boeing Company, focuses on exploiting Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy (MSMA) materials for primary rotor control. The TSi Smart Flap system utilizes single crystal, martensite, NiMnGa materials with superior force, stroke, and frequency response properties to actuate on-blade trailing-edge flaps. The use of Smart Flaps has the potential to reduce helicopter control complexity, cost, and maintenance requirements. TSi Project Leader, Dr. Peter Chen, expects that the integrated hardware/software Smart Flap system to be wind tunnel tested at the University of Maryland will demonstrate the feasibility of MSMA technology for primary flight control of helicopters. |
