SOCOM Secure World-wide Communications Interface System (SWCIS)

19 April 2004 - The US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has awarded TSi a Phase II SBIR contract after a successful Phase I research effort. TSi will construct prototype hardware and design software to interface ship bridge information via satellite or HF radio to remote command stations. TSi will leverage its experience with the Trident Vessel Information System (VIS) for the task.

The SWCIS will be a hardened embedded system that will serve as an interface between the SOCOM Integrated Bridge System (IBS) and secure military communications systems. The SWCIS will package IBS data, configure the radio, and handle data and voice transmission. The SWCIS will also be capable of data reception and transmission both on land and at sea. An interface will be developed for presentation of recieved visual information. A key feature to the project is the utilization of the http open-standard for ease of adoption over the widest range of platforms.

The test platform for the SOCOM project will be the NWS RHIB 110. Traveling at speeds greater than 50 knots, the RHIB 110 produces powerful acceleration forces that require rugged equipment and specialized ergonomic interfaces. This presents a key challenge to David Gent, lead software architect, Patrick Kimvilakani, lead hardware engineer, and Dr. Carole Teolis who is managing the project.
