Local User Terminal (LUT) The TSi SARSAT Local User Terminal (LUT) uses a modular design with distributed, parallel processors. This distributed processing architecture greatly enhances the speed, reliability and maintainability of the overall LUT system. Parallel processing technology is one of the most important developments in computer science. TSi was the first COSPAS-SARSAT supplier to use this state-of-the-art technology in its LUT design. The parallel processing architecture used in the TSi LUT achieves high reliability, high availability, ease of maintenance, simplicity of error diagnosis, low down time and expandability. LUT Processing Architecture The TSi LEO LUT uses parallel processing architecture to process signals from the three types of COSPAS-SARSAT beacons.
As shown in the figure, the satellite signal is processed by a wide-band receiver, and split into the three frequencies, 121.5, 243, and 406 MHz, which are then processed by individual digital signal processing units. The processing is managed by a fourth processor, the Master Control Processor (MCP). In the unlikely event that a processor fails, the MCP automatically takes over the job of processing the frequency band. If the MCP were to fail, one of the processors takes over its role. This strategy maximizes the amount of data that is processed in this mission critical, life saving system. TSi LEO LUT can be accessed by a LUT Remote Monitoring System (RMS) from TSi's offices. This automatic system downloads data from the LUT to determine the quality of the processing and to detect the onset of errors. A LUT technical expert reviews the results of the monitoring service on a daily basis. This service is available to all LUTs under TSi's Comprehensive GlobalSAR Maintenance.
